My Vinyl Collection Part 41: Jethro Tull, A Passion Play(1973)

This is one of the most hated "Classic Era" Jethro Tull albums, and
as to why has always baffled me a bit. Its like Thick as A Brick only
much stranger in some ways yet much more straightforward in
others. Like TAAB, A Passion Play is one long song that is a concept
album, however here the concept is much more clear and the lyrics do
actually tell a straightforward story (for the most part). It is the story of a
man who died and his journey through the afterlife. The only part that is
not straightforward is the random inclusion of a strange spoken word story
about a hare who lost his spectacles, only to be ended suddenly to go
back to the main story. Musically it is very different than TAAB as it has a much
bigger use of sytnth instrumentation, and a good  amount of Saxophone use as
well. A great album for sure but nothing else like Jethro Tull has ever done before
or since. I can really only recommend this to big time fans of progressive rock and
Jethro Tull, as the album is so far outside the mainstream they are the only ones I can
really see this appealing to.
41!
